Ep 10 Adopting the 8 Phases of EMDR to the EMDR Intensive Model: Phase 3

In the third episode of our series on adapting the eight phases of the EMDR model for intensive treatment, we delve into Phase Three, assessment. As an LCSW EMDR certified therapist and consultant, I prioritize connecting with my clients during this crucial phase. Instead of relying solely on a set list of assessment questions, I focus on building a strong therapeutic connection and actively working through their distress.

Prioritizing Autonomy and Choice

During the assessment phase, I believe in giving my clients autonomy and choice in their healing journey. Together, we choose a starting point that resonates most with them. By prioritizing their preferences and needs, I foster a sense of empowerment and collaboration throughout the EMDR process.

Tools for Emotional Regulation and Confidence-Building

To reduce emotional intensity and build confidence in the EMDR process, I utilize various tools. The ASSYST protocol, EMD, and the C POS protocol are just some of the techniques I employ to help clients navigate their emotions and develop a sense of safety and trust.

Empowering Trauma Resolution in Phase Four Desensitization

Phase Four, desensitization, is an exciting phase where we utilize bilateral stimulation (BLS) and regularly monitor the client’s progress. It’s essential to recognize that processing time can vary, and parts work may come into play during this phase.

Trusting the Process

Trusting the process is a key principle in EMDR therapy. In moments of doubt, I encourage myself and my clients to return to the target memory as a guide. By anchoring ourselves to the original trauma, we maintain focus and momentum towards healing.

Exploring Various Types of Bilateral Stimulation

If we encounter challenges or feel stuck during desensitization, I often suggest switching up the type of BLS used. Whether it’s light bars, buzzers, or headphones, incorporating different forms of BLS can strengthen the therapeutic connection and facilitate trauma resolution. By adapting the stimulation to the unique needs of each client, we enhance their sense of empowerment and engagement in the healing process.

Leveraging Interweaves in Phase Four

In this episode, we also delve deeper into the interweaves frequently used in Phase Four. These interweaves are additional interventions employed when clients require extra support or guidance during desensitization. Through targeted interweaves, we address any obstacles that may arise, ensuring smoother and more effective trauma processing.
